| Sacha Lodge |
|
The best organized and best-run rainforest lodge in Ecuador, Sacha Lodge, is now world famous for its gigantic canopy towers with walkway between. No other rainforest lodge in the world has such an amazing set of canopy towers, as both are 70 meters tall and have a connecting, suspended bridge between them. There also are lower levels on that tower system that allow views of the layers of the rainforest from within the forest. Another feature of Sacha Lodge that is quite attractive to nature lovers is the blackwater lake in front of the lodge. Canoe rides on the lake offer excellent viewing of a variety of waterbirds and monkeys. The star of the lakeside show, however, must be the famous, colorful, chicken-sized Hoatzin. This strange and wondeful bird looks like a punk-chicken with its jaunty crest, bare blue facial skin, and deep red eyes. In the 1990’s scientists discovered that this bird is unique in the world in being a ruminant----a foregut fermenter of leaves—like a cow. It digests leaves thanks to its multiple foregut stomachs stocked with special, symbiotic bacteria that break down cellulose. The bizarre biology of this interesting bird earned it a cover story in SCIENCE, the elite, international scientific journal.
